Stretch Wrap Or Shrink Wrap

Well if you need one or the other, you should care and just about every industrial, commercial or distribution company uses these products. The last thing you need is to order a product that won’t work for your application, especially in these time sensitive days. These are two very different products used for very different applications.

Let’s clear up the confusion. Shrink wrap film is made from polyolefin plastic, while Stretch wrap is made from polyethylene plastic. Shrink wrap is generally used to protect a single product, such as the plastic over toys at the toy store or CD’s when you first buy them. Shrink wrap gets its tight seal through a heating process. The product is wrapped and heated with a hairdryer-like tool or put through a heat tunnel. Shrink wrap can also be used for bundling products together, such as bottles of soda. In some cases, shrink wrap is used for palletizing although it is far less common that stretch wrap for this application.

Stretch wrap is generally used to hold boxes on a pallet for transport. Stretch wrap is pulled around the load and stretched. The plastic has a memory and wants to return to its original size. This “elastic band effect” holds the load tight.

Generally stretch wrap comes in 12″, 15″ and 18″ sizes for hand wrapping and 20″-60″ sizes for machine applications. Shrink wrap is available in most even number sizes 4-20 inch and is generally “center-folded”, that is the film is folded over itself to form two layers. The product is inserted between the two layers and sealed on the remaining three sides, then shrunk by heat.

Elite Performance Nutrition

The average Premier League player covers 10-12km in a 90 minute match, so just as you wouldn’t expect to travel very far in a car with no petrol; getting your football nutrition right is a serious matter too…


Football players generally eat their pre-match meal three hours before kick-off. The meal will contain low glycemic load carbohydrates for short-term energy, with protein and essential fats, and they also eat foods that improve cognition, motivation, and that balance neurotransmitters. Players should avoid anything that will cause stress to the body. Eating predominantly gluten free grains with things like chicken, fish, eggs and blueberries is a good start. People call them superfoods because they improve mental clarity and decision-making is a big part of the game. They often have their diet planned by sports nutritionist London to gain that extra edge.


A typical match day meal will begin with a starter such as a light salad, or a soup, full of vitamins and minerals from vegetables. The main meal will consist of something like wholegrain rice, which is a good carbohydrate and also contains vitamins and minerals, salmon for protein and essential fats, eggs, which have essential fats and something called phosphatidyl choline, which makes acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that affects attention, that will improve awareness. For dessert there might be some blueberries with natural yoghurt. They’re all fairly quick digesters as well, meaning they’d be out of the players’ stomach in two hours, allowing them to rely on sports drinks in the hour before kick-off.





The days of a Saturday evening celebratory blow-out are long-gone too, what players consume after a game is just as important as in the build-up…


For post-match recovery the primary concern is hydration – replacing fluids and electrolytes lost during the game. Players weight themselves before and after the game to monitor how much weight they lose, and if they’ve lost say a kilo of body weight, they need to drink one and a half litres to be rehydrated.


They also need to stock their muscle and liver glycogen and repair their muscle proteins, so they’ll be given a drink with both carbohydrate and protein in it. That will help drive the repair processes in the first 20 minutes after a game.


Most people won’t want to eat straight after exercising, so up to about an hour to two hours post-exercise is a good time to have a solid meal, and then probably another lighter snack that’s well balanced with carbohydrate, protein and essential fats about four hours after the game. All the food needs to be multi-nutrient dense with minerals and anti-oxidants to speed up the recovery process.

Lower Limb Problems in Runners

Running injuries put a sudden dent in your preprartion for 5k, 10k, half marathon, marathon and triathlon events. Many lower limb injuries are a result of over pronation – plantar fascitis, Achilles tendonitis, shin splints, chondromalacia patella, ilio-tibial syndrome etc…


Over pronation is a term for people who have a flat foot and require special running shoes or orthoses – insoles that you put in to your running shoes to correct the over pronation.


A therapist will use a number of tools to assess why you are getting foot, knee or ankle pain. One tool to use is the foot posture index or FPI. Here the physiotherapist will look at:


  1. Talar head position
  2. Bulging in the region of the talonavicular joint
  3. Supra and infra lateral maleolar curvature
  4. Height and congruence of the medial longitudinal arch
  5. Calcaneal frontal plane position
  6. Abduction / adduction of the forefoot on the rearfoot

They will score your foot postyre as follws:


-2 – extremely supinated

-1 – supinated

0 – neutral

+1 – pronated

+2 – extremely pronated


sports injury clinic.jpgThe average FPI is 2.4 (slightly pronated) a score of 0-+5 is considered neutral. A score of +6 to +9 is considered pronated, > +10 is hyper pronated. A score of -1 to -4 is supinated and -5 to -12 is hyper supinated. If your physiotherapist scores you as pronated they will advise you on which orthoses to wear.


A phsyiotherapist will also assess your:


  • Pelvic inclination, males should be 5 – 8 °, and females 7 – 10 °
  • Patella tracking
  • Thomas test, Ober’s test, hamstring length
  • Lower abdominal strength and co-ordination test
  • Lower limb biomechanics
  • Trigger points in gastroc/soleus complex, tibialis anterior, peroneals, ITB, rec fem, glutes, piriformis and plantar fascia
  • Tibialis posterior dysfunction
  • Knee muscle function
  • Sub-talar, 1st MTP Jt and inter MT Jt accessory movements


After your physio has decided if you need orthoses they will start treating the imbalances they have found this can include corrective exercise such as


  • Self myofascial release


Using a foam roll, tennis ball orgolf ball to release the glutes, piriformis, TFL, ITB, rec fem, quads, gastroc, soleus and plantar fascia is a great way to start reducing your lower limb dysfucntion.


  • Stretch

Stretching the lumbar erectors, psoas, rec fem, quads, adductors, TFL, ITB, gastroc, soleus, peroneals. glutes, piriformis, plantar fascia and hamstrings will hwlp to correct muscle imbalances that predispose you to lower limb pain.


  • Mobilise

Mobilising the sub-talar, MTP, inter MT and patello-femoral joints help prevent getting stiff achey joints.


  • Strengthen

Strenghtening the abdominals, glutes, VMO, tibialis anterior, tibialis posterior and foot intrinsics muscles helps to correct muscle imbalances.


Once you have your orthoses and your home exercise programme you should see an imporvement in your lower limb pain.

What is Ideal Nutrition?

Try to fit as many fresh vegetables in your diet as possible. Instead of having mashed potatoes with dinner, have fresh asparagus or green beans. You should eat breakfast every day so your body has the energy it needs to function. Studies have shown that people feel better and eat less during the day if they start the morning with a good breakfast. Avoid eating highly processed foods. Make sure your breakfast has some protein in it to help you feel satisfied.

Put a lot of fiber in your diet. Foods with a lot of fiber in them such as nuts and whole-grains are great. Because the fiber takes a long time to break down in the body, you feel full for longer than with other foods. This way you won’t have cravings for junk food as often.

To keep your body healthy, eat foods that are rich in iron. Iron is important to many functions of the body, such as the proper development of the human body and the repair of wounds. Iron transports oxygen to the tissues that require it. A deficiency in iron will lead to anemia, which will result in overall body weakness.

Make meals enjoyable and fun to help persuade your picky or nervous eater to try a healthier diet. If your child is wary of certain foods, try cutting them into fun shapes or serve them with a favorite sauce or dip. Bright, colorful foods may also be more appealing to your child.

Avoid using too many condiments if you’re trying to eat a healthier diet. Dips, sauces, spreads and dressings may jazz up a meal and taste delicious, but they are often full of fat, salt and calories. Try cutting back on how much dressing you put on your salad and how much mayonnaise you use on your sandwich.

Make your own fruit smoothies. Smoothie products you can buy in the store or at a stand, can be full of calories. If you make your own, you control how nutritious it is. Plus, it is easier to fit into your eating plan. Use ingredients like skim milk, Greek yogurt, bananas, frozen or fresh fruit and ice, to make a healthy, low calorie smoothie.

Nutrition for Pregnant Women

Proper nutrition during pregnancy is essential to having a healthy child and can affect the child for life.  Poor nutrition can also lead to complications for the mother and can lead to health problems that last long after child birth. Good prenatal nutrition can increase you chance of a healthy , trouble-free  pregnancy and birth.

Most women know or have heard of the basics regarding prenatal nutrition. Don’t drink coffee or caffeinated drinks, no alcohol and no medications unless prescribed by your doctor. Some lesser known foods can also contain substances that are harmful do a developing baby, as is eating uncooked or undercooked meats or fish.

Undercooked foods can lead to toxoplasmosis, a parasite that is present in undercooked meats and that pregnant women are especially susceptible to. The parasite can affect the developing child by causing hearing loss, blindness and mental retardations. Some children don’t develop symptoms till years after birth, and require special care for years after birth.

Soft cheese’s, such as goat cheese, brie or Mexican queso blanco are more often made with unpasteurized milk and could contain dangerous bacteria. The infection of listeria, the bacteria found in unpasteurized milk, could lead to pre-term delivery or miscarriage.   Avoiding soft cheeses and checking to labels of dairy products to make sure they are made with pasteurized milk is very important during pregnancy.

Be cautious about eating cold cuts or deli meant s they can contain the same harmful bacteria as soft cheeses. Doctors also recommend pregnant women stay away from cooked turkey breasts and rotisserie chickens that are stored at cold temperatures as the bacteria can survive the cold. Freshly cooked or heated up deli meat and chickens are fine.

Certain fish have high mercury content and can prove dangerous for the developing child. Most high-mercury fish are top-of-the-food-chain fish such as shark, swordfish, king mackerel and tuna steaks. Canned solid white albacore tuna should also be avoided, the type labeled ‘chunk light’ are safer as they are smaller fish with lower mercury levels.  Keep in mind that many fish, like salmon, sardines and herring are great for you and have loads of omega-3 that is essential to boosting fetal brain development.

Skip the sushi and sashimi during pregnancy as the raw fish might contain bacteria and microbes that are harder to treat during pregnancy. Non only is it unpleasant to have food poisoning or get sick as a result of bad sushi, but because there are so few medical options for treating pregnant women who have food poisoning the sickness could drag on leaving less nutrition for the baby.  Opt for rolls made with fully cooked fish instead, and avoid sickness.

Healthy nutricion embarazo is extremely important, but knowing what not to eat can be just as important as taking your prenatal vitamins and keeping your meals down.  Being aware of the danger certain foods pose to you and your unborn child can make a help keep you and you baby healthy.

The Joy of Exercising When Pregnant

Pregnancy exercises can not only keep you in shape while you’re pregnant, they can also help to prepare your body for the delivery of your precious little bundle of joy. Wall Push Ups

This is an exercise that most doctors will suggest for a pregnant woman. To begin, stand with your face to the wall and lean against the wall with your hands flat on the wall at your shoulder level. Now slowly bend your elbows and lean forward until your nose touches the wall. Keep your form straight just as if you were doing floor push ups. Work yourself up to 15 repetitions of this exercise slowly over the course of a few weeks.


Walking is another great exercise for the pregnant woman. Find a good pair of supportive walking shoes and comfortable socks and put them on. Wear clothing that is comfortable and relaxed. Start slow and aim for just a block or so unless you are already an avid walker. Go your block or so and work up to a mile or so each and every day. Breathe deeply and don’t walk too fast. Just take your time. This is a great way to stretch your legs out and improve your stamina. It’s also a great way to improve your deep breathing techniques.


There are many yoga forms and poses that are safe when you’re pregnant. Make sure that your yoga instructor knows that you’re pregnant as she will have to adjust some of the poses to accommodate your growing baby. Remember to take it slow and easy as your ligaments are stretching in preparation for your baby’s birth. Don’t over do it and if your instructor tells you not to do a specific exercise listen to her, she knows what she is talking about.


Swimming is an excellent exercise for a pregnant woman. You can find many comfortable pregnancy swim suits online and wear those or simply find a pair of shorts and a loose tee shirt that won’t get in the way. You will want to start slow and work your way up if you’re doing laps or other swimming. Don’t over do it and don’t get in the hot tub to take a break as the high heat could harm baby.


There are many pilates exercises that are safe for moms to be. Again, follow the instructor and make sure that he or she knows you are pregnant. When they tell you to stop, stop.

It’s always important to check with your doctor prior to starting any exercise program. Some pregnancies are high risk and your doctor may wish for you to confine your exercises to one such as walking only. Or, the doctor may not want you doing anything at all depending upon your condition. Pregnancy is a normal function for a woman’s body and gentle exercise is generally encouraged.

Get Fit With These Outdoor Exercises

When it comes to working out and exercise almost everyone works out at home with some home equipment or dvd work out programmes, or they make the trek to the gym.

The crowded, loud gym with it’s sweaty equipment, and stale smell.

And this is really sad because all these people are missing out on what may be the best part about any fitness programme and that is getting outdoors, enjoying the fresh air and getting those endorphins pumping.

The only ones that seem to get outdoors are your bikers and your joggers.

But you can get an entire work out done outdoors with lots of variety and train for fat loss or muscle building, or overall conditioning.

None of this has to be done indoors because you don’t need all that crazy, complex equipment.  You really only need your body!

Now, you can add some equipment in order to get a lot more variety from your work outs but you don’t need it.

There are so many body weight exercises you can use, you’ll never get bored.

But if you ever decide to add just a little bit of equipment to spice up those outdoor fitness sessions you can get a dumbbell or two (or kettlebell), a medicine ball and maybe some resistance bands. Many of these exercises I got from outdoor fitness Wandsworth Common in London.

Keep them in the boot of your car and you are good to go.

If you have a track nearby or some green open space, maybe a soccer field or baseball field, that’s perfect.

You can then get outside and perform one of my favorite work out styles that is way better than sitting in some stale gym, going around and around like a hamster on the stationary bike or treadmill zoning out to the television or whatever bad music is blaring throughout the gym.

With this training style, you’ll combine resistance training in the form of body weight exercises (for more variety grab a dumbbell or kettlebell and medicine ball), combined with cardio in the form or running.

One of the best things you can do to get great results from your training program is to keep your body moving.

Forget about doing a set of ten reps for an exercise, resting for ninety seconds or two minutes and then performing another set until you’ve finished your work out.

Instead, you’re going to keep moving the entire work out, as you’ll be running between sets!  Or, most likely, jogging!

Here’s how it works.  Like I said, you can do this in any open space but I’m going to use a track in the example to make it easier.

You’ll run laps around the track.  At the start and at the halfway point you’ll perform exercises (you can do it just at the start/completion of each lap at the beginning).

You’ll then complete x number of laps, say four or six, depending on your conditioning and time available.

An example could look like this:

Jog half a lap
30 Body weight Squats
Jog half a lap
20 Kettlebell or Dumbbell Snatches
Jog half a lap
40 Mountain Climbers
Jog half a lap
20 Kettlebell or Dumbbell High Pulls
Jog half a lap
15 Burpees
Jog half a lap
25 Kettlebell Swings
Jog half a lap
30 Alternate Forward Lunges
Jog half a lap

That would be 4 laps, which on a track is mile.

The great thing is, you have hundreds of body weight exercises to chose from, lots more if you include a dumbbell or kettlebell so you’ll never get bored.

You can adjust the rep numbers up or down as well to always make the workout challenging for you.

You have exercises like jumping jacks, seal jacks, side to side hops, split shuffle, skater hops, lunges, squats, push ups, burpees, squat thrusts, planks, and more.

And all of these have lots of variations (there are probably twenty or more ways to do push ups!).

Most importantly, by getting outdoors and working out like this with body weight exercises, you not only get the benefits of the fresh air you get something we just don’t get enough of in modern society, you get to move your body the way it’s supposed to move!

No sitting still in exercise machines working each little muscle in isolation.  That’s not what our body wants! It wants to move!  All of it.

So get outside for your fitness and use these body weight exercises for a better you!

However, what you may not realize is that proper dental hygiene can have a direct impact on a your health in other ways. What is a Fitness Boot Camp?

The fitness boot camp has grown in popularity over the past few years and with good reason.  A well run boot camp is a lot more fun than your typical spin class or aerobics class, not to mention sitting on a stationary bike by yourself for forty-five to ninety minutes, while staring at a television screen.

Another great reason fitness boot camps have become popular is because of their effectiveness in helping people lose weight and become fit.

Simply put, a fitness boot camp is a group exercise session where the attendees are taken through an entire fitness workout using some combination of calisthenic exercises and body weight exercises.

Most boot camps nowadays will also incorporate training tools that are easy to use in group settings, such as suspension trainers, kettlebells, dumbbells, and resistance bands.

Most fitness boot camps originated outdoors and their style of exercise gave them the name boot camp because people thought of military boot camps and the routines that new recruits were put through when first joining the military.

A fitness boot camp will also include interval training and even some strength training as well.

This is in the context of an intense, high energy workout with very little rest.

It is designed to push the boot camp attendees much harder than they would push themselves if they were working out alone.

Another aspect of boot camps that most should follow, is using timed intervals instead of counting repetitions.

This allows all the members to go at their own pace without falling behind.

For example instead of a circuit of body weight squats, push ups and burpees, all performed for twenty reps each, the circuit would be 30 seconds per exercise.

By using timed intervals, everyone can go at their own pace, rest when they need to and never fall behind because at 30 seconds, everyone switches to the next exercise whether they performed 5 reps of an exercise or 15.

This also allows everyone to try and better their own record the next time they do the workout.

Each boot camp should include a warm up and a cool down period of five to ten minutes each, with a twenty to forty minute workout.

Some of the many exercises that may appear in a boot camp include squats, lunges, push ups, jumping jacks, sprints, planks and more.

A fitness boot camp can be a great way to drop unwanted pounds and get in shape.

It allows people to have a built in support group to help them stay accountable, stay motivated and reinforce positive behavior.

Keep in mind that many boot camps just try to completely trash their campers, as if getting them to feel like they want to throw up after every session is the goal.
